SAP Deployment Phases

There are lots of SAP deployment phases that can be used. So to know more about this information let us tackle this section.

What Is A SAP Deployment Phase?

The SAP deployment phase is the phase of the project where the deployment activities are carried out. The deployment phases are further divided into three main categories:

Driving Business Value Through UC - Sap-ebook-banner

In-scope phase:

The first phase in the SAP implementation project. In this phase, all the planning activities are performed.

The main aim of this phase is to know about the business and business processes that need to be carried out by a company.

Realisation Phase:

So this is an important part of the SAP implementation project. Where all the business processes are defined and application logic is created.

This can also be called the design phase as here the design blueprint for realization has been created and tested. So, it includes all testing activities like unit testing, system testing, regression testing, and integration testing.

Deployment Phase:

The deployment phase starts when a complete realization has been done. And also application logic has been defined properly in the SAP system development environment (SAP SD).

Here, we have to deploy applications in the production environment with proper configuration settings. So that users can access those applications with their credentials.

SAP Deployment Phases Flow:

So, as described above there are three main SAP deployment phases. Therefore, let us see how these three phases flow.

1: In-Scope Phase

In this phase, the business scenario is captured in the form of a project charter. So the implementation team then performs the following activities:

  • Business process analysis and definition
  • Business process mapping
  • Functional design (solution design)
  • Data design and database design
  • Requirement analysis and reduction
  • Technology architecture definition
  • Security architecture and access design

After this, the output of all these activities is consolidated into a project plan. And also it is approved by a steering committee.

This means that this phase ends with the approval of the project charter. So, this is an important phase for an SAP implementation project.

Hence, all planning activities have to be carried out in this phase only. And also it will have to be approved by the steering committee.

So that we can continue further with our SAP project successfully.

2: Realisation Phase

After the approval of the project charter, we can finally get into this phase. So as we have done all planning activities in the In-scope phase.

Hence, here we are going to implement the business processes defined in the previous phase. So, there are mainly two types of implementations that can be done in this phase:

  • SAP standard package implementation
  • SAP custom development (SAP SD)

So in this phase, we will do all the implementations that are mentioned above. And also we will undertake all the necessary testing activities for these implementations.

In this case, a steering committee is not required to approve our project plan. So a steering committee is required only for approving the project charter.

Here we deploy the SAP system and make it live for users. We do all necessary configurations and settings in this phase too.

So that users may perform their required tasks with their credentials and system variables as well. And also they may access these applications with proper security settings and so on.

3: Deployment Phase

Completing all these activities successfully in the realization phase. So we can move on to another phase i.e., the deployment phase now.

Here we will deploy applications in a production environment with proper configuration settings and configurations. As per defined business processes as described above.

So that users can access those applications with their credentials as well as system variables etc. Again it does not require a steering committee approval for our project plan to go ahead with this phase successfully.

But it requires a steering committee approval to go ahead with an SAP implementation project as a whole successfully. Here we will deploy applications in the production environment with proper configuration settings.
